perceptualChaos
eek what areas did it get spilt onto? what happened when it got spilt and what happened when you tried to turn it back on? if you disconnected the power and the battery as soon as you found out it was broken you might have increased your chances of salvation a little bit. i'd say the chances of the hard drive being ok are still relatively good. not sure about the rest of it though if you only care about the hard drive you could probably try and take it out, carefully clean non-electrical parts with a cloth, any electrical contacts with some isoprop. Make sure it is 100% dry (compressed air could work) then try and put it into a similar laptop and see if it works. i'm sure you could find someone that you could just take your laptop to and they could see if its fixable, fix it if its, and/or recover your porn collection that you so desperately want back to some kind of external media (DVD-R or another HDD) If nobody has any better ideas there's always "computer repairs" in the yellow pages. Might pay to get a second opinion after they give you a cost estimate though
Teret
Cheers Tim, it was turned off at the time and closed so I'm still hopeful
kritical
Your hard drive should be safe, they're vacuum sealed so no liquid is getting in there... Worst case scenario is that there is electrical damage to the hard drive... in this case if you want your data recovered you'll need to send it to a specialist... Best case scenario is pretty much what P.C. said, try it in a similar laptop and pray that it still works See now if this person had of been drinking Tea instead of Wine this wouldn't have been a problem! Mr. MuN
this dumb as woman at work spilled an entire cup of coffee on her laptop keyboard while it was on, the screen went dark and nothing was happening. I unplugged it, turned it on its side, drained the whole cup of coffee out (it even stank of coffee). I told her to take it home and dry it out, which she did and now its working again (somehow!). I'd say not all is lost plus for $20 you can get 2.5" -> 3.5" laptop HDD to normal PC HDD adapaters from dick smith. easy peasy.

Guest
oh, right... thought there maybe some chemical property of wine which ultimately fucks up computers... but, as we've heard above. non alcoholic drinks are just as prone to being spilt *reaches for mug of green tea*
