'Smart children will vote green'

Published Date: 04 November 2008

Irish Greens have welcomed research that claims smart children grow up to vote for their policies.

An academic study compared the voting preferences of 6,000 adults in the UK's 2001 general election with their IQs as ten-year-olds.

The findings showed that those who supported the British Green Party had the highest average childhood IQ - 108.3.

Green Party Senator Deirdre de Burca said: "Protecting the environment and preparing for climate change have always seemed pretty intelligent to me.

"But it's nice for the scientists to prove it for us, particularly in the run up to the European and Local Elections."

The research also claimed those who scored higher in childhood IQ tests were also more likely to take part in political activities and campaigning.

Those who didn't vote had the lowest IQs, measured at an average of 100 according to the study, carried out with the UK Medical Research Council.

Senator de Burca added: "Considering the similarities between British and Irish culture I'm confident that the trends in this study are applicable in an Irish context."

Professor Ian Deary of the University of Edinburgh who led the research, said: "How one votes and to what extent one takes part in the political process is the result of thinking and decision-making, so this may help to explain the findings."

People with higher childhood intelligence were more likely to take part in rallies and demonstrations, to sign petitions and to be more interested in politics generally.
