mp3 encoders

I use Sony Acid for recording. Records to wav then I use a conversion program to pop to mp3. There i can choose bitrate, force quality rather than speed etc. There is probably heaps of good recording software out there, this is just the one I'm familiar with.

well. hehe, I hate this topic, but this is what I suggest. Encode all your mp3s as 320s, which is a bigger file size to a VBR but many argue that they sound better and retain a bit more of the spatial infomation/sound stage.

I use this to convert files, and I'm happy with it.

Not sure what your recording with, but even something like an early version of soundforge will do you a good job.

WHen converting to MP3 set to 320kbps for best quality, agree with Sect - has a big influence on final "sound Stage". As for variable bit rates I set to 0 on my mp3 converter which ensures as accurate a conversion as possible.

Definately 320 kbps with no variable bitrate...

I learnt the hard way.. encoded lots of stuff then tried to play them back through Virtual DJ (similar to Vinal scratch and Sarato) and the quality is appalling...

I'm almost tempted not to encode at all
