heres a rant that has been building up for a little while.. sit down roll a ciggy and get ready

About 2 months or three months ago I was contacted by a person from a well known nz band. He asked me if I would like to go on tour with them as a VJ. I said yes I would be very keen. They asked me what I would do for them and how much I would charge.

I said I would do a new set spacifically for them that would be a total length of 3.5 hours . and said that this would take around 40 hours to complete. They said yup thats cool, but before we go ahead with it can you show us a sample. to which I did. They viewed it and were very stoked with it and gave me the green light for the project.

just so you know, 5 gigs travel accom bar tab and a reasonable fee , totalling around 2500$.

So I went to work filming mixing cutting remixing tightening clips for them. I pretty much focused all my energy on this and would be engaged in some kinda aspect in responce at all times.

IU would send them updates and breakdowns of work I had completed everyweek and ask to go to some reheresals so we could have a dry run. as playing specific visuals for specific songs needs to be tries and tested. this never happened, continuous excuses on why they couldnt.

I then asked to go to one of their rehersals so I could film some aspects of them playing as to add to their (at this stage 2hour long original video mix)..this also never happened.

I kept on working regardless and had completed the work. I sent an invoice to them and that was all good. flash forward to the week before the first date. I recived an email saying that they could no longer afford to take me even though there are multiple verbal and partly written agreements .

they then came back after pretty much ignoring various emails from me asking for the money that I am owed and said "yah you can play at the auckland gig for a signifigantly lowered fee than the original amount discussed and a bar tab and some free tickets" to which I begrudgingly said yes , as to not lose face and be blacklisted.

this was two weeks ago.

today I recived an email from the band saying that they cant afford to get the hardware for the event coming up this saturday...

so Im left with nothing after doing 60 + hours of work .....

basically they owe me 2500$ I am about to send my invoice to them and wait for the storm......

I have spoken to legal peeps .

yah

end rant

Was wondering where your visuals were at that show, was very much looking foward to it. Fucking stink one bro! Don't know how they couldn't afford to bring you along, phattys was packed I presume the rest of the tour was a success along with the steep ticket price...

...Which brings me to my next wee rant. Whats up with ticket prices for local acts, yeah I'm talking big names who do tour internationally but still, If a well established band does a tour (just as an example I'm going to say The Black Seeds) they will pack out pretty much every venue they play yet still charge $25-$40 per ticket, yeah yeah supply and demand, basic economics and what not but the simple case is quite a few people who are keen as fuck to go wont be able to afford that or can't justify spending that much on a night out.

I come from a hardcore/punk rock background so I guess it's a bit different but I have seen many internationals from parts of America, The UK, Canada and Australia do tours here and will charge around $15-$30 a show, thats a fucking international man. Just saying the musics for the people, especially dub, roots, reggae or whatever and I dont understand the whole forcing fans to choose between having milk/coffee/cheese/whatever for the week or seeing some fine ass talent.

edit: oops did I say wee?

answered your own question there dude. These guys still don't make fuck all. Freddys, Black Seeds might be making enough coin to support themselves but it's not like there making enough to live off once they give up the music. Also, most(all?) of them still do cheap shows anually Orientation, Grey Lynn festival etc. Alot of these guys have also crossed over from strictly indie to getting major air time on mainstream stations.

I answered my own question because I knew the answer, my rant was on the fact that music like this should be for the people, yeah they should make a living off it too if they can, I accept that but surely somewhere around the $15 mark should be resonable considering the calibre of the act, (did I mention the internationals I've been seeing) might be steep for some but affordible for most as opposed to steep for most and simply unreasonably priced for the others. Yeah sure when overseas charge what you like for the exotic band from New Zealand, home of sheep and Lord of the Rings but when you are on home turf please for the love of Bob play for the people.

Maybe if people actually paid for music these days (as opposed to illegally downloading) then they wouldn't have to charge so much

But yeah - unfortunately if they continue to sell out venues then they have no reason to put the prices down.

yah I dont think it was them that were in the wrong as they do seem like really solid guys/gurl and just so we are clear and incase theres any lurking types I have no issue with them at all. I have been advised that it is an issue with managment... yah

but oh well

thems the breaks,.,,...

yah am contemplating turning footage I have done for them into a video exhibition type thing as its well trippy and ultra good <

to the person that decides inner vinyl paper-sleeves will not be allowed to fit the proper direction, inhibiting my ability to remove my vinyl - fuck you.

Your definition of proper direction is so you don't have to take the sleeve out to get at the vinyl? If so then

haha has anyone seen that recent KFC ad for the KFC Roller or something, where a random guy is seen walking through a party, takes a bite from his 'roller', interupts the dj so he can 'wicky-wicky' one of the vinyls, high 5's the dj and walks off. As any Dj knows, this happens in a party, and its very serious business time.
