Grind
Post about food in here. New kebab joints, favourite Asian food halls, your best sandwich recipe, it can all go in here... OK I'll start. Pizza. Apparently there's this new place down on Commerce St called "Sals" which does authentic NY style pizzas... like massive 18" ones etc, that you can buy by the slice. The owner is from NY and actually imports all his ingredients from NY. Apparently it's mean. Al Volos on Symonds St is the best i've tried, which is the same kinda thing as the above but the owner Josepe is from Sicily, it's damn pricey but the pizzas are so damn tasty. NOM NOM NOM... Sals is the bizzo!!! epicly massive pizzas, living out my dream of being in NY with a huge as fck slice of pizza that you have to hold up with both hands just to eat. Pretty expensive but well worth it

Phil O
I made my own sushi yesterday, came out surprisingly well! By the end i was rolling them like a pro. Would definitely do again, you have to buy a lot of paraphenalia: mat, seaweed sheets, special vinegar, sushi rice but its goddam tasty and satisfying I tell ye

I made tempura veges and prawns with hot soba noodle soup last night. Had to go on a big mish to get all the ingredients.. mirin, dashi, some 7 spice stuff to go on top etc. But was well worth it and heaps of fun! beatrixquiddo
That NY place sounds real good..I have definitely been enjoying Ginas on the pizza/pasta tip. The italian place in the ponsonby food court does pretty good and cheap gnocci. My own creation of note would have to be quiddos famous teriyaki burritoes. dirtycash
this thread is the bomb! Mexican @ Ponsonby Food Court....proper authentic bizzo... and what i was telling Quiddo the other week...skip the bacon...you get like a roll of premium salami, bout the same price as bacon ,and you cut it super thin and fry it in a dry pan...comes out all crispy and tastes better and less fatty than bacon.... lasts for ages too, use above method, toss it in some spagehhti with whatever, chuck it on pizza etc etc.... proper cured meat is the shizz! perceptualChaos
The italian place in the ponsonby food court does pretty good and cheap gnocci Man I tried proper style gnocchi when I was in Venice last year... daamn. Been hooked since then! I found some real good prepackaged stuff in the international section of foodtown - brand is "italgnocchi", they have plain and flavoured versions. More commonly, you can find "Delmaine" brand in the fridges as well with the Ravioli etc but it's not that great IMO.
Josh Grant
Daikichi Sushi - Opposite the Scene Apartments, next to the foodtown on Beachroad (theres been a bit of construction work on that building recently). Although she is Korean, she makes awesome Sushi, real fat and moist, and she has premades but you can get her to make it on the spot, pretty much upto you how you want (ie: half tempura prawn, half tuna etc) She also does a real tasty Bul'Gogi which is called beef teriyaki on her menu, but its Bul'Gogi, a korean style bbq beef on rice. I highly recommend it, it's a tiny place but definitely one to try out. All the people that I've taken to get food there love it and I've nearly tried everything on her menu cause that's how good she is She also does a real nice spicy pork on rice (with kimchi) and most of these meals are around the $10.50 range. Aphra
The Ponsonby food court is the best imo. The Japanese Mark and I get all the friggin time and the Mexican was all good though I've only been once. If you haven't tried noodle salad A from the Vietnamese, you should. It's awesome! The chef at that place used to own the best Vietnamese restaurant in Auckland I think. And while I'm here Richmond rd cafe has to have a mention as the best breakfast in Auckland (and the most expensive) I never knew scrambled eggs and bacon could taste soo good!
