perceptualChaos
Ah ok, well if you don't care about speeds then maybe try Xnet Fusion or Slingshot. If you like to use the internet at peak times, and expect streaming media sites like youtube etc to run fast all the time, then maybe stick with Telecom. Known One
If you want simple/affordable billing + good helpdesk and acceptable speeds go Xnet or Orcon. Xnet if you are willing to adopt a VoIP line and you will save money overall. Personally I wouldn't give a cent to Telecom unless I had to more based on principal. Withstanding bias they are a bunch of underhanded monopolistic cunts who will screw you given half a chance, not to mention they are a rip off. They also happen to have the biggest international pipe (They own half the Southern Cross Cable) which translates into pretty reliable on-peak. Otherwise the DSL backhaul is identical to what you would get via EUBA with Xnet/Orcon except perhaps the hand-off. Stay away from Slingshot if you want my advice. I don't really want to go into the reasons, but shit flows downhill and there's plenty of it to go around. Orcon, even though they don't like to acknowledge it, is government owned... they (Kordia) operate at arms length but basically they have a lot of money behind them (Last I heard they were operating at a loss). If you want your hard earned tax dollars to go to good use, you might as well go Orcon and suck up some of their international pipe. The capital that Kordia injected into Orcon allows for some pretty decent bandwidth, but it's not without issues. Don't expect plentiful bandwidth. They also operate a YouTube cache which Xnet uses as well which is handy. My 2c, Orcon or Xnet, Telecom if you don't mind the bad Karma.

perceptualChaos
That local speed is incredible... although I'm way out in the sticks here atm, so might see the same kind of thing when I move to Shibuya in April. Lol at the international speeds though, mine drops quite a bit as well, but still fiber quality: At my old place I think I was getting 30/30 at San Jose. Nato
I'm on Telecom and I get pretty good download speeds. A decent torrent will sit on about 1500kbps.
Known One
I'm with (working at) Xnet and recently things have improved to the point where we have plenty of International bandwidth to spare. That as well as we now make use of different Chorus backhaul arrangments which equate to faster handoff (EUBA). Our higher ups aren't going to screw our customer's by releasing any all you can eat/unlimited plans etc if you're worried about the speed etc, we've returned to being a VERY good contender. Also new plans coming out shortly so we'll be able to compete on pricing etc in the current market. Your available speed is mostly governed by location... not all locations have DSL2+ or have EUBA Access. Or some locations may have congestion at the local exchange. Chorus recently upgraded my Exchange for example, and at the same time I was able to migrate to EUBA (Like Nato who's on Telecom) and my connection is just as fast (faster actually) as his. I'm getting more like 2500+KBps, but that's purely because the quality of my phone line is better. Just so anyone who isn't aware knows... Telecom has undergone structural separation to avoid regulation, which means the company was voluntarily split in two. Chorus is the backhaul/lines management and Telecom is the retail end. They still got somewhat regulated, but that's another story. Telecom, Xnet, Callplus, Orcon etc all use Chorus to deliver DSL. So essentially it's the same connection from your house to the ISP unless you are using an unbundled service like Orcon+ or Telstra/Vodafone... meh, not sure who else exactly. The point is, Telecom is using the same backhaul provider (Chorus) as the rest of em... so unless you have some particular reason to be with them such as pricing, speed is no better assuming your ISP isn't running low on international bandwidth. With all that in mind... my recommendation would be... wait for Xnets pricing plans... if you want good speed/support and a local NZ company... go with us. Make a choice between us and Orcon would be my suggestion. If you don't care about slower speeds, bad support but want to torrent your ass off, go Slingshot. If you Don't mind corporate greed, go Telecom. Phew... /essay Edited February 13, 2012 by Guest

Known One
Also.... when you do your speed tests... do them to San Francisco guys... it's a better indication of how fast your internet is behaving overall than a local test. Some ISP's will have a saturated International Capacity which won't show on a speed test in Auckland... also workplaces may have massive speeds local, but shit speeds international... Work lets us do shit all International Down... But National is sweet...

phonetics
interesting...this is what it is to San Francisco 1000kBps is a typical download speed here...kinda lulz how a place like Te Aroha can trump some Auckland speeds. although, in saying that, i'm probably the only person with internets here
