Dr Awesome
Sounds like an inverter problem, or possibly a back light problem. What make and model laptop is it? You're looking at a few hundy to get it repaired, IF you can just buy a replacement inverter... Failing that you're going to have to buy a new screen which could cost anywhere from $100 to $2000 plus labour (~1hr).

phonetics
can't you just buy a 'stand-alone' flat screen monitor and plug it in ?

Dr Awesome
right so if you've tried plugging in an external monitor that proves it's not a backlight/inverter issue with the built in panel. This means you're limited to a graphics card problem. About the only people you can get in touch with are a crowd called TSAtech up in newton. They might have to do a process called "reballing" though, which can often only last 6 months approx before failure again (as opposed to outright replacing the GFX adapter on your laptop).
