Grind
This makes me sick! Specifically what makes you sick about it? The fact we're developing our ghetto inner-city prison and putting up another eye-sore in prime real estate.. I always thought the plan was going to be to move the prison elsewhere.. guess not. Pakage
Yeah, i mean, they just spent millions a few years back adding the new Remand jail to the Mt. Eden site. So something like this has probably been in the works for ages despite what they've been saying to the public. I do agree, its a retarded place to have an actual prison. I think its a (semi) good idea to have some sort of remand jail close to town so that they dont have to ferry people back and forth all the time to go to court. But as for a permanent prison where people serve years of sentences, completely wrong place for it.
Guest
Grind; you havent been taking your water today have you now? Be a good citizen and have a nice tall glass. You'll forget all about this prison scheme. Watch a little tv, maybe have a timtam and a nap... What fuckers. Yet ANOTHER reason to bail Auckland asap. kilotone
fuk that, its about time the central city got what the suburbs always get. Play your part team. Its a motorway area, industrial, commercial, no notable views of the volcanic cones, harbour or cityscape and has an existing land use activity. not to mention all the other high quality development that flanks our motorways... love this one: "The main visual feature around here is going to become the prison ... We don't want to portray having a jail in the middle of town ... If they do want to build a jail, why can't they build it out by the airport?" yeah because no visitors arrive into auckland that way either... just nestle your head into the pillow a little more and take it for the team

It will have pretty epic views out to the harbour/Rangitoto.. that's true about the land use at the moment but that's prime development area and there's already been a fair bit of gentrification going on..maybe you're right though, we should embrace it's dero-ness.. it's gritty, I'll give it that! hazel
all i can do is read this thread and laugh! loving how prison talk turns into mt eden dubstep BRILLIANT! a bit of soul sucking wobble to make a life sentence more unbearable. question what are the majority of prisoners in Mt.Eden prison for? violent crimes? is it max security?
Pakage
Mt. Eden is primarily used for a staging area to send Auckland convicts to other jails down the line once they've been sentenced. I would be suprised to hear anyone serving more than about a 2-3 year sentence in Mt. Eden prison only. I think its a medium to maximum security prison, but the majority of really bad convicts would only be there for a few days or weeks until they're shipped off to one of the maxi's down the line. That said, id presume most people are in there for things like, drugs, burglary and assault. Serious crimes but not murder or rape.
Merge
me mum works in the Mt Eden prison and the Remand prison few days a week teaching literacy. there are certainly serious crims in there for murder and/or rape, but yes the vast majority are medium offenders. The remand prisoners serve short periods but there are long-term prisoners in the Mt Eden prison. Im unsure of exactly how/why they decide to incarcerate someone longterm here, as opposed to out at say, Paremoremo.. perhaps it is first time offenders of serious crimes or something, with repeaters going out to maximum security prisons. or perhaps the judges offer offenders a chance to prove their worth to the mt eden dubstep programme.
