Girl's 6-floor city plunge

A North Shore 18-year-old is lucky to be alive after falling multiple storeys from a central Auckland carpark building during a night of drinking and taking Ecstasy.

Friends say she fell six or seven storeys and is in Auckland City Hospital with breaks in her vertebrae, a punctured lung and three broken ribs. But doctors say she will walk again...

...The couple - whom the Herald has agreed not to name - want the incident to be a warning to other parents, saying "you need to spy on your children", looking at who their friends are and what they are writing on networking sites such as Facebook.

Fuck off, actual. Dont spy on your kids retard.

The 12-year-old had been given the drugs by a family member to sell at school.

The incident underlines a worrying trend of drug use by intermediate and primary school pupils, which is borne out in the latest statistics.

underlies a worrying trend of other peoples family members giving away "kilograms" worth of stash.

in my day it was only a couple of tinnies worth.

US man charged after 'marinating' cat

NEW YORK - Police say a traffic stop led to animal cruelty charges after they found a live cat "marinating" in oil and peppers in the boot of a car.

Buffalo police say officers heard the cat meowing when they stopped 51-year-old Gary Korkuc to ticket him for running a stop sign on Sunday night.

They say they checked the boot and found 4-year-old Navarro in a cage, his fur covered with oil, crushed red peppers and chili peppers, according to the Buffalo News.

Police say Korkuc told them he did it because Navarro was ill-tempered. Korkuc was charged with cruelty and released; his phone number isn't listed.

Police say he told them he was going to cook Navarro. Korkuc also told officers a number of things that didn't make sense, including that his neutered male cat was pregnant.

Animal advocates have cleaned Navarro and put him up for adoption.

not sure why, but i found this hilarious

My mother (who works in/around schools) showed me an information bulletin put out by AKL police last week, they found some kids in primary/intermediate have been selling/taking cheap methamphetamine mixed in with sherbet/raro and then put into drinks (I think, I guess they weren't snorting it or cooking it up) at school.

Four men drown after prank goes wrong

The bodies of four men have been recovered after a prank went wrong on a weekend boating trip .

Emergency services received a call from a child, adrift with four other children in a US reservoir.

The children reported that one of the four men from the boat pushed another one in the water as a joke, however the man could not swim.

The men jumped in one after the other to try and save him, but only one grabbed a life jacket - which he was not wearing.

The eldest son and the partner of the Blenheim woman killed by a drunk-driver who sped away from a police alcohol check-point have backed the judge's decision not to jail the young driver.

The charge brings a maximum penalty of five years' jail or a fine of up to $20,000.

She ended up getting eight months home detention, 60 hours community work and was disqualified from driving for three and a half years.

Should be charged with vehicular manslaughter and thrown in jail.

you may recall a headline in the herald the other day "alcohol killed my daughter".

this is a quote from the article: "Mrs Peary said her daughter had been convicted for drink-driving three times and was before the courts for a fourth offence when she died."

mrs peary, why are you blaming alcohol itself? alcohol didn't kill your fucking daughter you idiot, she killed herself by drink driving and crashing after already being convicted of doing so 3 times. pisses me off how the existence of alcohol gets the blame, people seem to struggle to take responsibility for their own, or in this case their daughter's stupidity in this country.

Amen, I drink plenty of alcohol but haven't yet undertaken any of the terrible offenses I'm supposed to. Surely it's only a matter of time before I turn into a recidivist drunk driver, wife beater, child abuser and the life of the party...

Police in southeastern B.C. have raided a marijuana grow operation that was apparently guarded by black bears.

Officers conducting the raid two weeks ago at Christina Lake found a property with two residential buildings and a fenced-off grow-op with about 1,000 plants, police said Tuesday.

But they also found about 10 bears that the owner appeared to be using to keep people from stealing any pot plants, said RCMP Sgt. Fred Mansveld.

"[Officers] soon noticed the bears were docile and tame," Mansveld told CBC News. "One of them jumped on our unmarked car for a while. But it soon became apparent they were habituated to the grow operation."

It was evident the animals had lived on the property for some time, police said.

The woman accused of running the grow-op has been feeding the bears for years, one neighbour said.

Police are recommending that the woman face charges related to marijuana cultivation.

Conservation officers now have to decide what to do about the bears, which might have to be destroyed because they have become too used to human food and contact, police said.

Christina Lake is about 350 kilometres east of Vancouver.

The package includes:

* A split purchase age for 18 for on-licences (bars and restaurants) and 20 for off-licences (liquor outlets and supermarkets).

* Having national trading hours of 7am-11pm for off-licences and 8am-4am for on-licences.

* Empowering local authorities to override these trading hour restrictions, though extremes of a 24/7 free-for-all or a totally 'dry' policy would fall foul of the test for reasonableness test.

* Local communities will be able to decide on the concentration, location and hours of alcohol outlets, including one-way door policies. Granting licences will have to consider whether "the good order of the area would be lessened".

* Ready To Drink beverages will be restricted so they cannot hold more than 1.5 standard drinks or have more than 5 per cent alcohol content.

* Making it criminal offence to provide a minor (under 18) with alcohol without a parents' or guardians' consent, and if consent is given, the alcohol must be supplied in a responsible manner.

* Dairies and convenience stores will have to be considered "grocery stores" before being eligible to be an off-licence.

* Cracking down on those who drink in carparks, school grounds and other private places by including them in the definition of a 'public place'.

* Restrictions on alcohol promotions apply to all businesses.

* Investigating a minimum price regime.

Bye bye
