So you want to heavily tax people for being successful?
Personally, i have nothing against people making money and getting rich. But the 1% super elite that actually pull all the strings are fucked in the head. Take those fuckers down IMO.

I don't get it though, people will always pull the strings and people will always be fucked in the head.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely and all that, it's part of the Human Condition and has been repeated without fail through every stage of political evolution we've ever known.

Right ok, so you take them down... (somehow), a new elite will move into the void...

im not saying i have all the answers, but something has got to be better than the current setup. We have 1% of the people with 99% of the wealth and they dont give a fuck. They are basically running the planet, its environment and its people into the dirt to stack another billion ontop of their existing billions. fuck them and what they're about. If you're super rich it should be your duty to be a philanthropist and a charitable mother fucker. Some are, most are not. fuck them.

The widening gap between the rich and poor is a very real issue that I think most people know needs to be tackled head on sooner rather than later. In the US I think it is almost certainly predominantly a result of the neoliberal policies over the last 30 years eroding the checks and balances of the system.

The occupy wall street movement seems to have it's heart in the right place, but I think they need to have a more clearly defined focus and objective if they are to achieve anything. For example a completely transparent select committee review of the taxation system's part in the widening gap between rich and poor.

I don't agree with Doc that the current status quo is inevitable so it's a waste of time to do anything about it, but I also think the protesters are chasing too many pipe dreams and trying to push their ultra-left ideologies.

I'm not saying that the CURRENT status quo is inevitable, but there's always going to be the haves and have nots, even in a classes society.

I still think the best form of government is a democratically elected one.

I'll avoid quasi psudoscience however I'd say it's almost the "natural" state of all animals, homo sapiens included.

I whole heartedly agree and am in no way suggesting they try to install some kind of dictatorship or anarchy. Nor is that what they seem to want from what i gather, they're protesting corruption and corporate greed not democracy.

The entire idea of the protest is to try and get democracy back on track as currently the 1% are controlling the welfare of the 99% and not giving 2 flying fucks about them and thats not how a democracy should work at all.

Democracy and "a democratically elected government" are a bit different Pakage... Anarchism is probably more 'democratic' than the current system, as it advocates direct democracy. Indirect democracy on the other hand is designed to protect the 1% from the 99%, which is not always a bad thing because the majority does not always (usually?) know what is best for itself.

Pretty sure the occupy wallstreet movement spawned from adbusters which has always been anti-capitalism in general. It is definitely not just about implementing taxation reform within the current system (which I support), but about a much deeper discontent with the political system (which I also agree with, but don't think anyone knows how to fix it...).

It's such a broad issue that it's really a tough one to tackle. The protesters don't seem to have enough of a grasp on it to really put forward a cohesive message at the moment. The way I look at it is that we are all part of the system whether we are rich or poor. The rich rely on the masses to make their billions and so should have a greater sense of responsibility in the overall scheme of things. I would wholeheartedly support lowering of the very lowest tax rates where it makes the most difference to people's way of lives, and dramatic increases in the highest tax bracket where it makes the least difference to people's lives. The rich idea that because they worked hard for their money they deserve it can be mostly thrown out the window when you look at the millions of people who are working hard at shitty jobs, with long hours and getting paid next to nothing for it. Circumstance, upbringing and dumb luck carry a lot more weight than they want to believe.

NZ to veto total protection of Ross Sea

New Zealand is set to veto any attempt to completely protect the world's last unexploited ocean - so a lucrative fishing industry can continue operating.

An official New Zealand document leaked to Fairfax reveals Wellington, backed by the US, does not want the whole 650,000 km2 Ross Sea declared a marine protected area (MPA), despite a 25-nation convention saying it is "of high global importance".

Maps in the document written by the Ministry of Fisheries show a large area of the Ross Sea is excluded from a marine park. It means the fishing industry can keep taking toothfish, discovered by New Zealand in 1996, worth $18 million a year.

The world's southern-most fishery is 800km north east of Scott Base.

The paper says toothfish are "an ecologically important species", but many more fishing boats may chase it.

Teen set alight while pouring petrol

Last updated 09:23 14/10/2011

A teenager is in hospital with severe burns after setting himself on fire while siphoning petrol from his car in Manurewa.

Fire Service shift manager Jaron Phillips said the 19-year-old was legitimately siphoning petrol from his own car last night in Foxlaw St, Randwick Park.

"He couldn't see what he was doing so used an open flame for some light. Either a cigarette lighter or a match."

A resulting explosion caused severe burns to most of his body. He is in Middlemore Hospital's intenstive care unit in a serious but stable condition.

"It was silly. He should have used a torch," Phillips said.

"It highlights the dangers of an open flame, even things like a candle at home when the power goes off."

Sex offenders get Halloween ban

A California county yesterday banned sex offenders from decorating their homes to attract kids on Halloween or from giving out candy to children when they come "trick or treating".

Haha, I can just imagine all those non-sex offenders out there frantically decorating their houses to stop their neighbours getting the wrong idea

PM's credit downgrade claim under fire (video)

John Key has been forced to back-pedal over a claim he made to Parliament that international credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's said a further credit downgrade was likely if Labour became government.

It turns out Standard & Poor's never actually said that at all, with Mr Key admitting it was just an inference taken by one of his friends.

The Prime Minister has been on the defensive big-time when it comes to the credit ratings downgrade. That's included going on the offensive, telling Parliament Standard & Poor's made out a further downgrade would be "much more likely" under a Labour government.
