Can't believe we are even considering altering our ecosystem... haven't we learnt anything from Stoats, Possums, Rabbits, Hedgehogs, Ferrets, Gorse... (All introduced on purpose expecting positive results)

Once the Beetles are established there is no way to reverse it. At least with Stoats we can trap, fence and poison them. Those Beetles are going to be here forever regardless of any negative consequences down the line. not worth the risk at all imo. Surely there are better ways to manage pastures than to introduce alien insect species... no brainer

FFS yet again we haven't learnt from past mistakes.

yeah, dont get me wrong i see your point. but all a dung beetle really does is eat poop and provide a food source for birds and other insect eaters. What negative impacts can you see it having? Displacing naturally occuring insects? Maybe birds switch to eating them instead and another species of insect that was previously their main diet now exapnds and creates a problem? im jus speculating.

Also, why were rabbits introduced to NZ? Was it to fix some existing issue or by accident?

Pets probably. People brought shit that reminded them of home.

They were introduced so the British settlers would have something to hunt.

They were also a source of food obviously.

Patients to be frozen into state of suspended animation for surgery

Surgeons are pioneering a method of inducing extreme hypothermia in trauma patients so that their bodies shut down entirely during major surgery, giving doctors more time to perform operations.

The technique helps to reduce the damage done to the brain and other organs while the patient's heart is not beating. It also reduces the need for anaesthetic and life support machines.

Researchers are now set to begin the first human trials of the technique, which involves replacing a patient's blood with a cold solution to rapidly chill body temperatures.

The cold treatment, which is being developed at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and is featured in a BBC Two Horizon documentary, will see patient's bodies being cooled to as low as 10 degrees C.

The normal human body temperature is 37 degrees C and usually humans quickly die if the core body temperature drops below 22 degrees C.

Dr Hasan Alam, the surgeon who is leading the research at Massachusetts General Hospital, said that often emergency patients suffering from gunshot wounds, stabbings and car accidents are on the brink of death anyway so by cooling their bodies so extensively it can protect their brain and organs from damage.

Dr Alam said trials of the technique in animals had shown it to be hugely successful.

He said: "If you drop the body's core temperature and brain temperature down to 15 degrees C or 10 degrees C you are talking about 60 minutes and even 190 minutes of protection.

"By cooling rapidly in this fashion we can convert almost certain death into a 90 per cent survival rate."

'Appointment with death' cards shocking for elderly

Religious extremists have been sending cards to elderly people asking them to pick the date they are going to die.

The cards ask recipients to predict the date and time of their death and advise them to get in touch with evangelists to avoid going to hell.

Waiheke resident Marianne Taylor, 89, was shocked to receive an "appointment card" in the post last week.

The card, published by livingwatersnewzealand.com, was addressed to her by name and asked her to fill in the date and time of her death.

"Please don't forget to call me on the date you're going to die, then we can discuss your eternity," it says. However, the cards do not have a contact name or phone number printed on them.

Sad day for sure.

In further news, not to rain on the wake in here but fuck Gerry Brownlee and his dick-sucking of anything and everything mining. He is gushing about how the company handled the situation while the PM is saying they won't take a stance on the issue until an enquiry has been undertaken.

What irks me is that it should really be the mining company who have a responsibility for workplace safety and not many workplaces would allow big explosions as a norm for day to day business. Of course it should also be the responsibility of the government to have measures in place if they allow these sorts of businesses to operate in NZ so why not put our military budget to good use and actually have them ready with necessary equipment for these sorts of situations rather than off SAS'ing the fuck out of people in deserts.

I dunno, just an off the top of my head rant.

We will see what comes of this.
