Egyptian army units join the protesters, and the police stand down in Cairo.

The second day of a government-imposed curfew doesn't deter thousands of demonstrators, who are essentially given free rein through the center of Cairo. For the most part, police are absent and protests in the downtown area are peaceful for much of Saturday.

A senior army officer salutes a crowd of cheering protesters at Tahrir square in Cairo.

Texas poised to pass bill allowing guns on campus

Texas is preparing to give college students and professors the right to carry guns on campus, adding momentum to a national campaign to open this part of society to firearms.

More than half the members of the Texas House have signed on as co-authors of a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns. The Senate passed a similar bill in 2009 and is expected to do so again. Republican Governor Rick Perry, who sometimes packs a pistol when he jogs, has said he's in favour of the idea.

Texas has become a prime battleground for the issue because of its gun culture and its size, with 38 public universities and more than 500,000 students. It would become the second state, following Utah, to pass such a broad-based law. Colorado gives colleges the option and several have allowed handguns.

Supporters of the legislation argue that gun violence on campuses, such as the mass shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Northern Illinois in 2008, show that the best defence against a gunman is students who can shoot back.

Witnesses said there were reports of people being trapped in buildings across the city.

Amber Armitage said people were wandering around central Christchurch trying to get out but all exits from the city were blocked.

There was a strong smell of gas and clouds of dust.

A bus on Colombo St was "completely trapped under bricks" and people were working to free passengers trapped in it.

I had the live stream up on tv3 for a while and there was some really disturbing footage. People waiting outside their collapsed work building knowing that the rest of their colleagues are trapped inside. A lady being carried out with blood pouring down her face screaming at the camera to fuck off.

Brutal

Thieves target home of woman missing in earthquake

The family of a woman missing and feared dead in the Canterbury earthquake has suffered another cruel blow with her home being burgled while her children waited for news.

Producer and presenter Donna Manning is among about the Canterbury Television (CTV) staff missing and feared dead after the regional television channel's building collapsed in Tuesday's 6.3 magnitude earthquake.

Her niece, Lisa Gardiner, said while Ms Manning's two children were down near the collapsed building site yesterday when thieves broke into their family home. The home had been damaged in the quake and they had been unable to shut and lock the doors. There was also no power or water at the house.

Ms Manning's children arrived to find property had been taken from inside the house. They seemed to be holding up well despite this latest blow, Miss Gardiner said.

If these cunts are caught they should be named and shamed and stoned to death.
