Anti-Chinese leaflets spark fear and anger

A far-right Christchurch group has been condemned for circulating flyers in Auckland claiming an "Asian invasion" is taking place.

The group, which calls itself the Right Wing Resistance, has distributed "Stop the Asian Invasion" leaflets in suburbs with high Asian populations, including Pakuranga, Howick and Northcote.

Police are concerned that the campaign could lead to "racially motivated violence", says police Asian liaison officer Raymond Wong.

The group is headed by former National Front leader Kyle Chapman. It started the campaign in Christchurch last year.

"The police will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who commits or even incites any form of violence, especially racially motivated," said Mr Wong.

"Some in the Chinese community are deeply concerned about these racist flyers and have taken their worries not only to the police but also to local Chinese radio."

The group is recruiting other immigrants in its campaign against Asians.

A Brazilian student said she was told by a Resistance supporter in Northcote last Saturday that New Zealand was "a country for everyone, except Asians".

"He said Asians bring diseases and crime to the country, and New Zealand will be a paradise without them," the student said.

"I cannot believe they are trying to recruit anti-Asian supporters right in front of a Chinese supermarket."

Rapture now set for October - preacher

California preacher Harold Camping says his prophecy that the world would end was off by five months because Judgment Day actually will come on October 21.

The independent Christian radio host said today the apocalypse will come five months after May 21, the original date he predicted.

Camping says he felt so terrible when his doomsday prediction did not come true on Saturday that he left home and took refuge in a motel with his wife.

Camping, an 89-year-old retired civil engineer, appeared publicly for the first Monday night.

Rather than give his normal daily broadcast, Camping made a special statement before the press at the Oakland headquarters of the media empire that has broadcast his message.

I thought he had always claimed the world would end on October 21st. In his original prediction he said that Judgement Day would come on May 21st when true believers would be taken to heaven and a massive earthquake on Earth would leave the rest of us in a 'hell on earth' type scenario until Oct 21st when the world would eventually blow up....

Yea... that's right. Apparently his explanation is that God is being generous and is sparing people hell on earth until the October date.

Aaaah that makes sense. Forgive my earlier scepticism.

I've been lol'ing at this story all weekend.

It's unclear who should actually be attributed with calling it a party drug, either the cops or the jorno.

Somehow I don't think it was 18KG's of DMT powder either... that's probably enough to get all of NZ tripping balls.

18 KGs of mulched up bark/plant material sounds a bit more likely....
