Ignition
Oooh, that's harsh. Especially the photos and videos. BUT The fact that your disk is still spinning and there's readable data on there means that there is some light at the end of the tunnel. There are several data recovery utilities which should be able to get the disk into a usable state again, as it's unlikely the xbox wrote zero's over the whole disk. The best thing you could do at this stage is leave the disk unplugged to prevent further changes/data loss and get it to somebody who can help you out... There are plenty of computer tech guys on DBNZ who should be able to help (right?). My brother had a close call with massive data loss and was able to recover it using tools and information found online, so I'll check with him and post an update. Minimise all write activity to the platter and there is a 90% chance you can recover almost all of the data!
zeb
ha ha,thats what the hard drive was for guys, backup. but yeah i was gonna call this crowd after work today... www.datarecovery.co.nz to be honest though,i did kinda want a fresh start for next year(im enrolled at sae to do a diploma in audio engineering) my sample library was a shocking mess and i was getting bored with lots of it..... i think im just gonna accept my losses and move on.it'll be exciting building up a new library. beatrixquiddo
data recovery is expensive as though! better if you could find someone round here that can do it with some DIY software or something.
Aphid
I've formatted the wrong drive by accident before (quick format). Recovering was a cinch. I lost about 10-12 files which were at the beginning and end of the drive platter. Straight up, http://ntfsundelete.com/
Ignition
Sheeeit, if I lost my photos and personal videos, I would be doing everything possible to get them back. RE: Data Recovery specialists, as far as I know, their rates vary based on the data's commercial value, so hopefully wouldn't charge you too much for personal stuff. We had a major RAID failure on a hosted mail platform in 2008 and ended up with a $10,000 bill from Computer Forensics (http://www.datarecovery.co.nz). But yeah, you should be able to get your data back by using something like this.
Dr Awesome
Computer Forensics cost about $400 to $1000 for home user stuff IIRC.
