C Steppa
All takes effect tomorrow. Are you worried? Will you keep downloading and wait and see what happens? http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/5528064/Concerns-over-new-copyright-laws
Nato
Stick to private trackers and you should be ok I guess.
Known One
Some interesting points about this law that the boys here have come across implementing it at Xnet... It's 3 strikes per Copyright holder... not over all... (for example Sony BMG might issue you an infringement, Warner Brothers another... effectively you only have 1 strike for each) If you receive an infringement, there is a 28 day period where subsequent infringements from the Copyright holder are void... (To avoid getting pinged multiple times for one dowload I would assume) You infringements expire... can't remember the exact details around that If you get to three strikes, you can change to another ISP and start again at 0 infringements. As far as avoiding infringement notices, there's only two ways... get on to a trusted private tracker (anyone connected to a tracker has an instant list of all peers seeding/downloading a torrent... so you need to be sure none of those people are trying to monitor for illegal downloads) or don't download content from public trackers which is likely to be monitored. Old movies I would guess aren't actively monitored compared to recent releases.
Pakage
You infringements expire... can't remember the exact details around that I believe its 90 days? One thing to do is to simply just use ddl (direct download) services like www.oneddl.com which host the files on public services like media fire. I believe that the copyright holders are only looking at torrent trackers and the connection between you and media fire is ssl (encrypted), so they cant easily see the file you're downloading anyway. The only problem with these types of services are that you have to be on the ball as the copyrighted files are usually only up for a few days before they get taken down. You can also get download managers like jdownload that will queue up the multi part files for you and grab them in succession. A work around that a friend has done is he has bought server space on an amazon box which he has setup to torrent files outside of NZ jurisdiction. Then he just does an HTTP download from that server when the files finished and HTTP traffic is not being monitored by copyright companies. bring back irc imo Edited August 31, 2011 by Guest
Known One
It's 9 months apparently for the expirations
Nato
Yeah 90 days seems too short to me. They'd have to snap you every month for 3 months in a row to be able to charge you.
Pakage
Sorry, i understand now. I thought you were talking about the time the copyright company has to bring the infringement up with the ISP, which i think is within 90 days of it occuring? Not how long till your confirmed infringement gets wiped.
C Steppa
So will a programme like Peerblock solve that tracker problem and prevent me from getting infringment notices? http://www.peerblock.com/
Known One
You touch on an interesting subject... The simple answer is that yes it could help. Probably only <20% of the time imo Looking through the infringement emails we get, to detect file sharing of their content they connect to you and check that you are uploading the content (You share Torrents as you download *usually). They log the details of that connection and send it through to us. So with that in mind, if you install a program like Peerblock that blacklists them from connecting to you, you might prevent that connection being established. Problem is that the list Peerblock uses is likely to be no where near robust enough to protect you from all dangerous peers. *Some Torrent clients allow you not to, which would not necessarily stop other clients connecting to you, thus not getting around the problem. Known One
you guys should use this tactic at work mark: http://dts.net.nz/blog/action-on-copyright-infringement-muted Yea... our requirements for Copyright holders is a bit more strict than that even (As per the law). The fee is by law allowed to be up to $25 and the information they require is also specified under law.
Pakage
How To: Avoid Being "Tracked 100% of The Time" When Using P2P and Bittorent (Noob Friendly) Dont be confused, the title means you're being tracked 100% of the time if you're not doing any of these steps, not necessarily that these steps are 100% effective. Couple good tips there. Some of it seems a bit impractical tbh though.
