Auckland:

420

Ink & Coherent

Hamilton:

Flow Bar

Wellington:

Sandwiches

Christchurch:

Venue Music Bar

There's so much sick scenery in NZ, im not sure where to start. Probably the most spectacular stuff is in and around the Southern Alps. The west coast and fiordland are amazing. Try check out Milford Sound, lake Wanaka, Wakatipu and Te Anau.

For more summery vibes, id get up north to the Bay of Islands or even further north to any of the beaches to the north of Whangaroa. Seriously tropical up there in summer.

Where are you planning on starting your mission?

ahh, thanks for all the replies people!! will be in and around christchurch until the end of november i think, until i can sort myself out with some kind of car/wheels. just organised 2 weeks of volunteering at a backpackers so i have some free digs end of november near christchurch

thanks for the advice on venues thats exactly the kind of info i was after, will definately be checking that out once the jetlag has gone away... as for ladscape i have heard great thinks about the west coast and may head over there for a few weeks after christchurch, once i have wheels i essentially have somewhere so sleep so NZ is my scenery oyster... beach-combing and a huge list of presents that my family wants me to find for them

Splore looks AMAZING and exactly the kind of thing I would love!! yess!! Think that will have to be a definate yes! Right up my street.

I'm probably going to have to try and find some work at this rate!! i hear theres seasonal work picking and stuff? will have to get on that. is there anywhere that i should be avoiding by the way?

Feel free to send me a message when you're over, i'm staying in raglan at the mo which is a nice place to check out. Can hook you up with a place to crash and some food etc. Beer, etc.

thanks, thats safe as fuck maybe you can tell me some good places to go, you just have to promise not to murder me will def look up raglan as well

does anyone know if the great barrier island is good? and someone told me waiheke might be worth a squirt, and that they are both very beautiful.

Gore sounds like just the sort of place to avoid!

I am going to prepare myself to lose all of the credibility i retain by still being a total stranger and therefore potentially interesting, but I used to live in plymouth UK and wanted to go and see New Plymouth NZ... just because.

IS THAT A STUPID IDEA and is new plymouth a total hole? I want to send my old housemate a postcard from new plymouth. Its so cheesy i almost think i might just puke now and get it over and done with

Think that festival splore looks super tempting though.

Thankyou everyone for your replies, is really useful stuff already, peaceee x

I spent a couple of years in NP. The city itself isn't anything spectacular, but the coastal areas as well as the mountain (both in Winter and Summer) are really pretty. A bit isolated, but apart from that it's definitely worth a drive over.

Great Barrier > Waiheke

that said, both are pretty awesome. Great Barrier is more isolated so if you're into seeing some (relatively) untouched nature, hit that up. There's some amazing bush walks over there.

We can vouch for Dold. He won't murder you.

Great Barrier is worth a trip if you like the outdoors. Waiheke is more of a quick day trip from Auckland but Barrier you'd want to spend a night or 2. They are very different though. Waiheke is very built up now and Barrier is still pretty basic so 2 very different places.

Go to New Plymouth in March for Womad. Best festival in NZ imo. The venue is fucken awesome and the music is sick as well. Half the acts I have never heard of and they never cease to amaze. As Taiko says the coastal areas are wicked as well.

who to trust

Nah, Dold's an actual good dude. He gave me a washing machine for free when mine broke down. The sign of a true gentleman.

Aw shucks bro

  • 4 weeks later...

Cheers everyone, i'm now in NZ and trying to get my head around it. Had to change all my plans because I don't have as much money out of the whole foreign exchange thing - swallowed a few hundred quid more... and cost of living is a bit higher than I was expecting!! so instead of exploring the rainforest it looks like my new alternative plan is to get a job?!

Also getting my head around... munted = screwed/fucked aaand "sweet as!!!" best phrase ever. Someone has advised me to head to takaka and golden bay to find cool people. thoughts?
