Occupy Queen Street, Oct 15!

Video of the Auckland Uni occupation and protests

All over the world, the People's Movement against Austerity, Cutbacks and Capitalism is planning a mass day of action for October 15th 2011. IN countries like Greece, Spain and Italy, mass strikes are planned. IN the USA, the Occupy Wall Street movement is inspiring activists in another 70 cities to occupy their CBDs in protest against Corporate Power.

Here, in Aotearoa, we have seen a reborn student movement begin to take direct action and occupy their University in opposition to Neoliberal attacks on education. This spilled out onto Auckland's main street on Saturday October 1st, where one of the busiest junctions in New Zealand was occupied by the Real Aotearoa Hikoi. It is not only students who are angry at the direction John Key and the NACT Government is taking New Zealand- they were joined by Maori, workers and environmentalists, who took direct action and took over the central city for over an hour.

The final of the Rugby World Cup approaches, and the eyes of the world are on Aotearoa. A lacklustre election campaign sees NZ sleepwalking to a crueller, harder second term Tory Government. Hundreds of thousands of people have no jobs. Hundreds of thousands more languish on low pay without secure hours. Our public assets are to be privatised, our land and sea is to be mined. Our Tangata Whenua are disrespected and dispossessed.

Voting is not enough. We need to start the resistance.

Anti capitalist activists talked to leading student and Maori activists after the Real Aotearoa Hikoi and Occupation of Queen Street. We were all agreed that an action on October 15th would now capture the imagination of many who want to fight this rotten government.

"WHAT DO WE WANT? YOU tell us- we want a real democracy, not one where the boardroom and party bosses make all the decisions.

Get involved, be a part of the Movement and Have your say as one of the 99%!"

INspired by the example of the Occupation of Wall Street, we should take our cardboard boxes, our sleeping bags, our soundsystems with batteries and our friends, and take the central city back. But this time, not as a hundred, but as a thousand, two thousand, three thousand.

October 15th 2011- where will you be?

1. Items to bring to the occupation:

Sleeping bag

Tent

Food (as is necessary/practical)

Water (also bottles/gallon containers to help keep waste to a minimum)

Musical instruments/equipment

Art supplies

Electronic equipment (battery powered; a generator for equipment such as PA systems, amplifiers and projection screens was considered, this will be subject to availability)

Media/recording devices (IMPORTANT, for recording the events of the occupation and uploading them online. We cannot rely on external media to do this, although in cases where mainstream/external media do decide to approach us, the consensus is that "all media is good media", and we should not discourage or try to stop them from doing their work. If you are a photographer or have access to a video camera, please try to make sure you can bring this with you. We can use the power sources/WiFi capabilities of the surrounding buildings such as the SkyCity Metro to upload media.)

We're currently looking for someone who is able to provide a large barbecue grill within the first few days of the occupation.

2. The agreed upon proceedings for the march were as follows, and should be hereby promoted as such:

Meet at QE2 square on 15/10/11 at 3 pm

Rally and march up Queen Street at a relatively slow pace

Gather at the intersection of Queen Street and Wellesley Street (in a similar fashion to the march on 01/10/11). The atmosphere should be kept festive and interaction with the non-occupying public friendly. The intention of civil disobedience will be apparent. Music, art, and performance is encouraged. Depending on the number of people present we will maintain this location for a period of time decided upon by way of consensus on the day. The police may attempt to disperse the crowd. In this case we would advise a strategy such as linking arms and grouping together, one line behind another. This allows for a stronger resistance and makes arresting people more difficult for police.

Once consensus is reached, the marchers will proceed to Aotea Square and the occupation there will begin. We will decide on what area in the square to occupy depending on the number of people. The idea is to reclaim a space that is rightfully ours to occupy. Aotea Square is located on Ngāti Whātua land, who have given us permission to use it for the occupation, inclusive of all people who wish to participate. Aotea Square is also privately managed (owned?) by The EDGE. A festive, friendly atmosphere should be maintained, with music, art and performance. This will be a forum for debate and discussion on several issues and, as such, we are opposed to political censorship. The nearby council-owned Myers Park will be used if necessary, but not for the main occupation.

Once the occupation has commenced we will arrange to bring in pre-organised resources. This may include things like gazebos, equipment for preparing food, larger electronic equipment, cardboard boxes for padding/comfort, etc. There will be practical jobs such as preparing food or providing transport/carpooling which will run on a volunteer basis. Co-ordination will be required at this point to ensure that things still run smoothly if a volunteer is unable to continue to contribute for any reason (such as family, study or work obligations, or if they are arrested).

We agreed that the occupation area should be an alcohol and drug free zone.

3. Promotion

There are a number of ways in which people can contribute to promotion over the coming week. We encourage anyone who wishes to do so to participate in the following:

We will be present at the Otara Flea Market on Saturday 8 October

We will be promoting the event at the Avondale Markets on Sunday 9 October, from 6 am onwards.

There are plans to be present at the Hobson Street/Victoria Street intersection at some point over the following week with large, graffiti style promotional banners and printed flyers. This intersection is one of the busiest in Auckland for motor traffic. Contact Penny Bright if you wish to assist in this promotion.

We Are The University will be arranging promotion across the University of Auckland. Contact one of their members if you wish to assist in this promotion. They can be found on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/WearetheUniversityAkl

Postering will be taking place Auckland-wide over the coming week. Posters and flyers are currently being printed at the Unite National Office, which is located at 6a Western Springs Road, Morningside, Auckland. Posters can be collected here at 7pm Monday-Friday or at another time by contacting someone from Unite. People who are interested in helping with postering across Auckland can also meet at the Unite National Office at 7pm Monday-Friday where group poster runs will commence.

Please continue to promote the event in any other way you see fit, including online and through word of mouth. People are often more open or susceptible to promotion through personal contact or even a phone call as opposed to emails or text messaging. We encourage people to make their own banners, posters and flyers for the event which more accurately reflect the issues they consider important as well the aesthetic they prefer to use.
