Where's all the bass at?

So I found myself on Friday in Auckland at a loss for a place to go for a drink where they would be playing some DNB. It seems that with the demise of Fu, we are left without a regular spot. (outside of gigs/events at the usual haunts.)

Am I just really old and out of touch now, or is there actually no one who would have a DNB vibe throughout the weekend.

Used to be we had a bunch of weeklys and Friday regular rotations, I'd love to know if any still exist and where they're at... :?

There was Mixed Crate on at the Ginger Minx on Saturday night and also the Brookes Brothers and Joker at Studio.

Dunno if there was anything on friday, but Mixed Crate is a monthly i believe. Also, myself and Dr Awesome are putting on Sprawl / Keynote as bi-monthly's on rotation. Apart from that there's Mike's monthly at Red Bar and a couple other bits and pieces on around town.

You're right, its not as cranking as it was, but i think you might just be getting old Ducksta :nah_nah:

Ducky, did you try checking the site on your mobile device? Lately we have been putting more effort into keeping the events section updated precisely for this reason. For example the Teknik gig was in the events guide. Let us know if you think it could be more user friendly.

yeah na, i couldnt get data at the time on my amazing android phone. I could however drunken call and text zeb who made absolutely no effort to get back to me or inform me of said Teknik set at Khuja (which was about a block away ... gutted i didnt even think to go and ask at the door there who was playing).

AK(L) needs more weeklys/ alternate fortnightlys IMO.

Will check events guide, maybe you PHP nerds could set up some sort 'sign-up-for-text-alert-android-app' for these?

Myself, Doc & Co. are pretty avidly trying to make rising sun the new home of underground bass music in auckland. We have Sprawl, Keynote, Circles & Ritual all out of there now. Watch this space. MDMA should definitely make a comeback though.. sheeit, if only i didnt get arrested.. blue stars and red doves 4 life.

The fact that no other club has stepped up and filled the void left by Fu is definitely a sign of the times.

Also re: Fu, I've got mixed thoughts on this.

Fu closing was like a big tall tree falling over in the forest. All the small tree's that

wouldn't/couldn't/didn't get a chance are now able to reach up for the light.

This essentially brings more opportunity to smaller people, as you're able to basically "have a go" without cracking heads with professionals who'll crush you. You also don't pay heavily for having a gig at a venue that's not at the de facto.

The other side of the coin though is that people got lazy under Fu's shadow. Evidentially Coherant cant' be bothered to have another go which I personally thought was surprising.

By and large though change like this is temporally at least destabilising for a scene. Everybody is starting to find their feet though.

As it stands, AKL is still getting all the "big gigs". The real losers were nights tucked under the Fu brand (and the community attached off the end of that).

Those are good thoughts Hamish - sorta echo what I've been thinking about it as well. It was inevitable that Fu would create such a large gap in the scene, but I definitely agree about it beginning to recover. Very true about the losers being the regular nights that ran off the Fu crowd, but the market is still out there for that, and I think Rising Sun definitely can become the go-to bar, I've had some great nights out there relatively recently.

I think a certain number of people, people on the fringe of the dnb scene rather than being full on dj's/heads/whatever became underwhelmed by nights out following Fu closing, and wrote auckland dnb off with Fu... and I guess its just a matter of having a couple of good solid nights that start attracting them back to get numbers up at the smaller gigs again.

FU made a business decision to close down the club.

Since then, no other club has seen this as a potential business opportunity.

Makes ya think..

Not entirely so clear cut though, you still need people who know and understand the genre/market to pick up the ball and run with it.

Then there's things like getting the capital to do it.

FWIW There were people strongly looking into doing it.

I think you've really gotta allow a bit more time for something like that to happen tbh. It hasn't been that long a period since Fu closed. You can't really expect something just to pop up right away and be 'running things' can you?

ive been told dnb is over every year for the last 10 years..... usually by people who are now dubstep djs :D

people did get lazy - myself included - but part of it was, if you put too much into a gig you were more than likely to get rick rolled by another 2 gigs in auckland on the same night , so you rolled out the safe option (free gigs, paying for everything out of your own pocket for the love) just to have a party with no strings ....

Looking forward to popping up and putting on some gigs soon , drum n bass is healthy and is moving just fine. Drum n bass is all over the place , and its actually a nice change from the "semi-stagnant" scene we had before. What ive noticed in the last year is an impressive amount of gigs local and international, and guys stepping up to the plate and putting in work to throw these gigs. especially the 36deep gig at rising sun i was impressed by the amount of effort goin in, mad respect to that and everyone else throwin down!

True that, it's always gone up and down in cycles/phases, and there's been naysayers for as long as I can remember also.

And I wouldn't listen to what any dubstep DJ/fan tells you right now either, as it looks like the situation is worse for them right now.

But as long as there are passionate and well-organised people making shit happen behind the scenes the future aint so bad.
