Camping gear in Auckland

Hey all,

Coming travelling to NZ in a couple of months and have a ticket booked to Northern Bass (in UK a NYE festival is unheard of!). Realised I'll only have a day to sort out camping gear before it all kicks off. Wondering how easy it is to pick up second hand gear around Auckland? I've seen I can hire from a place but it'll be like $140 for two days and reckon I could probably get stuff for cheaper second hand then resell it...

All suggestions and abuse welcome :)

I would recommend a place called 'the warehouse' mate, I saw 2 man tents in there the other day for like 40 bucks, everything else is cheap and disposable if necessary...

I remember seeing the epitome of this sorta shit at Phat, people would rock up with brand new warehouse tents, gazebos, deck chairs etc, end of the festival just roll out and leave all their shit standing as it was!

Always thought the locals could have made heaps of cash taking them down, packing up nicely and whacking on trademe hah

But yeah screw renting gear bro, get yourself a semi passable tent, hit northern bass, then continue round northland camping up a storm irekn. make the most of the summer weather. but if last year's was anything to go by, better cop yourself a rubber boat and some oars as well

tread wearily of cheap two-man tents, they're not so waterproof as you may believe.

those "summer" sleeping bags can be a bit hit and miss also!

these two items obviously depend on your own level of comfort, of course.

you could try TradeMe for second-hand, or Hunting & Fishing for new (expensive), alternatively Outdoor Supplies is pretty reasonable.

OR

i'll sell you my old 3-man tent (which makes a good size 2-man tent), as i bought this badboy not long ago... :lol:8)

Thanks for the advice all. Seems can get a full set of equipment for the cost of rental! I can always check the weather forecast few days before to decide, though from what I hear NZ weather makes the UKs 'crazy' weather seem pretty predictable.

Phonetics, I'd be interested in buying your tent. In practice you can have it back straight afterwards to try and sell again as I'm going to be off hostelling rather than camping afterwards. The last festival I went to I was in a tent with the ex thats pretty much the opposite of your lightweight badboy tent... http://www.campingtentsbuy.com/images/l/201203/tent/cp0349_01.jpg this 4 man pop up tent had 10 of us in during a daytime storm comfortably! Though weighed 11kg!
